THIS ONE'S A BIT WEIRD BUT

Assuming Vern managed to get close enough to several Uvi to trigger his empathy ability, what sorts of emotions would he be able to pick up from them as they attacked?

Some emotional buzzwords would be determined, blood-thirsty, angry, urgent. It might be a sensation of very driven motivation -- they're very forward moving creatures in the metaphorical sense of the word. They have a desire or a mission, they move toward that goal until it's physically impossible to do so.

How large are the 'smaller ocean masses'? How much fish will they be containing etc

They're about double the size of a standard car, or as big as would be necessary to stuff an extremely large shark in. Most will be containing just one large predator, but some may be magically holding water for the purpose of other Uvi using it for their magic, and these would only contain a random assortment of fish unlucky enough to get sucked into the mass.
