BARRIER QUEST ENDING POST

BARRIER QUEST (FIN)

▢ Before continuing to read this post, please check out the new half-log that just went up and this one!

▢ TL;DR non-threatening Uvi have been discovered within the barrier after struggles with humans over magic and territory, leading to both the semi-creation, development and near destruction of the Palai species as it exists today.

▢ There will obviously be some questions about these new developments, and characters have to make snap decisions about what they'll do since the Qri ship is taking off on day 78 (AKA Saturday). If you have some burning interest, please leave that here and you'll be addressed ASAP since this is time sensitive!

▢ With the barrier removed, the island Uvi wish for it to remain down. While they were originally afraid of the humans returning and chose to create a safe haven within their captive quarters, knowing that they are no longer a threat means living within the barrier is essentially a waste to them. They can potentially return to a life without being under the rule of blinding, burning magic, even if they have evolved to be used to this by now.

▢ If characters look hard enough, they can discover the destroyed frequency center that controlled the barrier from the inside. While the Uvi tinkered with it as much as they could, they could never become technologically advanced enough or handle the energy output from the center itself. Those good with technology may be able to fix this center. If your character would like to help in doing so, reply here!

▢ Some Uvi will be content staying on the island, though they now have access to a rationable water source. Other Uvi are curious about the Palai and their new utopia under the ocean. If your character would like to help take them to this place, they can -- though the Uvi of course can do this on their own. They don't want to fight, but instead want to explore and, potentially, apologize to the Palai for indirectly having a hand in their demise. Alternatively, will your character try to stop the Uvi for whatever reason? Address your character's actions with regards to this issue here.

▢ Some may ask whether the Palai get to have a say in all of this? The answer is yes if someone can find a way to reach them. Since Palai were brought to the floating island, their opinion can be easily asked of -- they will agree that the Uvi who would like to come to Aimintas can, but that they want the coven members to stay with them. They don't fully trust these strange Uvi, and Palai present on the island will be very afraid of them at first meeting. However, the coven may have apprehensions about this. They don't know the Uvi outside of their savage context and may not be so readily trusting as the Palai still seem to be.

▢ There will still be a log put up tomorrow about casual Aimintas shenanigans if anyone wants to get in some last minute baby threads or anything setting-specific, but it will be backdated to Days 75 & 76, presumably before and after the island shenanigans are going on. This means that your input on whether to help the Uvi travel to Aimintas will be able to be posted until 10 PM ON SATURDAY (you get a little more timezone room than usual since this is A Lot). All responses to this post can potentially shape the wrap up summary on the 23rd.

▢ This will perhaps be the coven's greatest impact on the Palai and Aimintas -- will the Barrier Quest members help the new Uvi, or will they leave them in the barrier out of distrust and culture shock?

If any of the Palai parents bring their small lizard children with them, what might feasibly happen there?

o7

Additionally would there be any reaction from the Uvi outside the general reactions to any of the Palai who are on the island when the barrier comes down?

What would the Palai (either the ones brought to the island, or, if coven members have time to go back down and solicit some opinions, the ones on Aimintas) think about a) telling the Uvi about Aimintas in the first place or b) leaving/not leaving the Uvi behind the barrier, if they knew the full situation?

9S was made for and of ridiculous tech.

His question would be what they would want with this resource, but it ought to be well within his means to assist if he thinks there's a good reason for it.

RIP another doomed human race

Thanks for the details!

9S is thinking he may repair it, but with a provision. He wants to specifically teach the Palai how to repair and run it so they have some leverage in case the Uvi aren't being completely forthright with them. This would hopefully ensure that the Palai are needed so they wouldn't be harmed. How would the Palai respond to this proposal, and would the Uvi accept that condition?

In that case, 9S will do the repairs under those conditions.

Should I submit confirmation of that anywhere or is this thread sufficient?

Jay isn't a flier or a water-manipulator, so he can't actually do much except talk and argue vociferously, but if his opinion has any weight as the one who kind of organized Barrier Quest in the first place, he would advise taking the Palai's direction (with some measure of caution) about what to do with the Uvi. In practice, this means:

a) taking down the barrier, either by leaving the Elto bones there or (preferably) through repair and manipulation of the frequency center
b) telling the Uvi a modified version of the truth about Aimintas, obscuring details of the city/civilization who live there and particularly the more gory bits involving the Uvi's demise
c) if the Uvi still want to visit Aimintas without being given the details (or if someone else blabs the details), consulting the Palai before, if they agree, bringing down a couple of Uvi to see the city.

He would also advocate for leaving enough of the Elto bones with the Palai that they can power a flying machine and potentially visit the island/bring back Uvi if they so choose.

Geir would tell the Uvi that their ocean-going fellows blew themselves up, pretty bluntly, and would say that the Palai have a history with their people without getting into details - he'd leave it to the Palai to tell them about the Uvi attacking them. He'd encourage them to go ahead and reveal it if they expressed worry about concealing it, arguing that it was easier to be forthright. If the Palai agreed to a visit he'd bring any Uvi who were interested down. He'd also argue against any effort to leave the barrier up with the Uvi trapped inside.

His case to the Palai and the coven (though he'd consult the coven much less in all of this) would be that they either needed to accept that they'd be slaughtering the rest of the Uvi by trapping them, in the long term, or that contact would happen sooner or later after the coven left regardless, so it was better to control the conditions of it now before the Uvi and Palai ran into each other while competing for resources. He'd ultimately defer to the Palai and Uvi about the course of action after stating his case, unless the Palai argued hard for leaving the Uvi trapped. He'd also support Jay's idea of leaving a lot of Elto bones with the Palai.

ETA: After Vern and Geir talked about it, they would both pitch directly to both parties that it would be worthwhile to work to build a permanent path through the ocean between the land below and the land above if they wanted to coexist in the future. If they wanted to stay in contact, Vern would suggest light signals in the ocean (from the Palai, who could definitely do it with Elto firework techniques) and glass bottles or other artifacts with messages tossed down like in the legends (from the Uvi). Geir would also ask the Palai to help him bring up a bunch of the filter bark bushes and filter bark he worked on growing and gathering for the Uvi saltwater rain the month before, and leave the samples with the island Uvi to use and cultivate if they choose. The Palai who wanted to see the island would be asked to explain any cultivation tricks in exchange, while they would of course appreciate any artifacts the Uvi wanted to drop to the land below the ocean in the future. Barter!

oneandmikleonly: (been thinking of you all the time.)

Mikleo will:

- be in his lizardy dragon shape through all of the below actions rather than a humanoid one, if that affects anything
- leave the explaining to other people, mostly, though he will at least point out that while they are humans will not be around long and will leave soon, the Palai, like, exist, and suggest that he hopes the two groups could help each other out and get along (there's plenty of room on this world for both of them, after all).
- check with the Palai and update them on the nonthreatening Uvi in the barrier, emphasizing the nonthreatening part and also the get-along-there's-plenty-of-room message

If the Palai are okay with it he's also willing to carry and supervise a couple of the Uvi down to see Aimintas as a start to reaching out.

He would be for repair of the frequency centre and a lowering of the barrier that way; he would also back Jay on leaving enough Elto bones for the Palai to build a sea/sky travel machine (and in leaving them plenty in general; the bulk of the bones he collects is going to the Elto rather than the coven, though he's taking some with him.) He thinks that since they have so little time to decide, the best they can do is leave the groups with a means to keep connecting with each other.

Also this is a less long term impactive thing, but if they've got some sort of storage for it, he's going to shrug and lay in some kind of large store of desalinated drinking water for the island Uvi as a goodwill gesture while he's got the powers to do it.
