[He is indeed Way Too Serious, and also probably the worst person to expect to play along with shenanigans like the ones BB's trying to pull at the moment. On the other hand, dealing with girls (and people) like BB is also something he's just terrible at -- he doesn't intend to step on their toes, but their toes are everywhere and he's a bit clumsy at social things. A wee bit.
And there is no way he'll ever be able to fathom BB's internal monologue, or indeed her way of thinking, but since he's still stuck he's still listening once she remembers to talk to him. (In the meantime he's just been thinking up last-ditch efforts, like trimming his hair. It's a rat's nest from the trip, anyway.)]
It's just that where I come from, the bigger someone talks, the less they do.
