Until mass printing came about, I think. Which is what, 1850 at the earliest? Even then, it wouldn't be very accessible to the average person, but I guess that would be about the time of a shift... A lot happened in the twentieth century, I guess. A lot of it's pretty exciting, really, but it's really too bad about others, like oral storytelling, I think.
